Vogalonga, Venice

Vogalonga, Venice

Come and join us for a spectacular long weekend in Venice, see the city from the water and compete in the annual world famous Vogalonga event.

The Vogalonga is a 30km paddling/rowing race through the city of Venice and the lagoon up to Burano. Almost all rowed or paddled boats can participate, and there’s even a separate category for kayaks. There are usually well over one thousands boats in the race, of many types. We will be participating in a dragon with up to 20 paddlers.

All participants are issued a diploma of participation. The Vogalonga is not a competitive race and there are no winners. It’s all about being there.

The Vogalonga is a splendid, fun and thoroughly worthy event which takes place once a year in Venice and its lagoon. It’s normally held on the last Sunday in May. Like a protest, a get-together and a non-competitive race rolled into one, this is an event where rowers take over the lagoon and canals. They oust the destructive motorboats which churn up the fragile lagoon ecosystem and damage Venice’s buildings, and for one morning the peace is disturbed only by the slap of oars, the shouts and songs of rowing teams and the applause of enthusiastic spectators.

Teams and individuals from the Veneto, from the rest of Italy and from many other countries join in and add to the party atmosphere. Spectators watch from any vantage point they can find, enjoying the entertainment and encouraging the tired rowers as they approach the final stretch along the Grand Canal. Some teams dress up in costumes, others, in the livery of their rowing clubs, raise their oars in salute. The atmosphere is jolly, with extra cheers for those who make a special effort, such as bringing an onboard bagpiper.

Cruise trip across the lagoon

To continue with the nautical theme, we will be sailing from the port near our hotel to the start of the event on the Jolly Roger, a Venetian galleon on which we have refreshments before sailing back to our accommodation at the end of the day.

As well as participating in the Vogalonga, the weekend is also about exploring the beautiful and historic city of Venice, a World Heritage site that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE START OF THE TRIP?

The weekend trip starts in Cavallino, Venice on the Friday. The easiest airport is Marco Polo and then by bus. Our guides will already be in Venice and ready to meet you when you arrive. If you are arriving earlier then you can leave your bags with the hotel if you want to have a look around Venice before the other participants arrive. We have a group meal on Friday night with full briefing on what to expect for the weekend ahead and participation in the Vogalonga.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END?

On Monday, you have time to visit Venice or spend the morning on the beach before departing around lunchtime to catch the bus back to Marco Polo airport.

HOW DIFFICULT IS THE PADDLING?

The fitter you are and the more training that you do beforehand will add to the enjoyment of your participation in the dragon boat. There will be at least two training sessions organised during May at Wraysbury Dragon boat club, situated on the Thames near Egham. If you need any advice about fitness please contact us and we will be happy to discuss any questions and concerns that you may have.

WHAT IS THE HOTEL LIKE?

We have booked twin rooms in a very friendly 3 star hotel on the Lido. The hotel has its own beach section and in conveniently placed for catch a bus to the ferry terminal to visit Venice.

WHAT IS THE GROUP LIKE?

Obviously each group is different but generally they are a fun, friendly, helpful & adventurous bunch. There will be people of all ages and from all walks of life. This is a fixed size group of approximately 18 people and is ideal as there will be plenty of people with similar interests & character without being such a big group that it becomes too much. Generally the group will be split 50/50 between people travelling alone and people that travel as a pair such as two friends or partners. There will be plenty of people to socialise with throughout the day and in the evening. Many of the people on this trip will have been away on an event with us previously so you may even bump into someone you know!

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE EVENINGS?

Once you have arrived at your accommodation you should have chance for some time to relax, have a shower etc before the evening meal. All our evening meals will be taken at the hotel as will our breakfasts, apart from Saturday morning when we will have food and drinks on the Venetian Galleon (pirate ship).
